Jon Grafton shrugged off repeated torrential downpours to claim a remarkable victory and become the 2022 WLGS Mens Champion. In the Ladies section, it was elation for Ingrid Deane-Williams who held off Kristina Larsson to win her second title of the season.
Such was the intensity of the rain, teeing-off was delayed by half an hour, and the soaked fairways made for a very different spectacle for the field of 30 golfers, who had been used to the firm, favourable conditions of the driest summer in living memory.
With limited run out, standing water and penal rough, a low-scoring winner was predicted by many, and the 34 points total from both Nash Majumder and Darren Butler appeared to be the winning number for the mens.
That was until Sarwar Alam appeared to have both hands on the trophy with a fine haul of 36 and almost certain victory.
But Jon G had other ideas, hitting a score below his handicap in difficult course conditions, to totally blow the field away with a total of 38 and a performance well worthy of a champion.
The Ladies section proved to be a much tighter affair, with Ingrid and Kristina locking horns, and for the full 18 holes, it was unclear who would come out on top.
However, it was Ingrid who did just enough to win by a solitary point and take home the trophy. She added to the victory by claiming the nearest the pin competition on the risk-reward 5th hole.
Bookies favourite Bakthier Hussain won the longest drive competition on the par 5 10th hole and made it a double with nearest the pin in 2 on the driveable par 4 12th, whilst Simon Turner's tee shot into the par 3 16th to 18 feet did enough to win the nearest the pin for the men.
Due to the society trip to Marrakesh, we are taking a break from domestic competitions until our final event of the season at Thorney Park on 2 November, which you can RSVP to now!
